Mexico and the record it shares with Brazil, Germany, and Argentina
El Tri added one more appearance at the World Cup and thus joined a list few countries can claim to be a part of.

The Mexico national team is once again competing in the World Cup, further cementing its status as one of the most frequent participants in the tournament’s history. As co-hosts of the 2026 edition, El Tri ranks among the national teams with the highest number of World Cup appearances.
Mexico belongs to an exclusive group of countries that have participated in 18 or more World Cups. With its appearance in 2026, the Mexican side reached 18 appearances in the tournament’s final stage, a mark surpassed by only three nations.
Brazil leads the all-time list with 23 appearances as of 2026 and remains the only country to have qualified for every World Cup edition.

The Seleção is followed by Germany with 21 appearances and Argentina with 19. Both nations are among the most successful in World Cup history, having won four and three titles respectively.
Just behind them is Mexico, which matched Italy’s total of 18 appearances at the 2026 World Cup. Italy, however, has not qualified for the tournament since 2014.
Most of Mexico’s World Cup absences have resulted from unsuccessful qualification campaigns. In 1934, the United States eliminated El Tri in a playoff held in Rome, Italy.
Four years later, in 1938, Mexico chose not to enter the qualification process and therefore did not participate in the tournament in France.
Mexico next missed the World Cup in 1974 and 1982, failing to qualify on both occasions after being eliminated during the regional qualifying competitions held across Central America and the Caribbean.
The national team was also absent from the 1990 World Cup in Italy due to the “Cachirules” scandal, which resulted in FIFA banning Mexico from all international competitions.
