The hidden detail within the USMNT’s World Cup 2026 jersey: “Sophisticated, luxurious and stylish”

The World Cup comes with its own dress code, and every national team arrives dressed for the occasion. The USMNT under Mauricio Pochettino is no exception.

On May 16, U.S. Soccer unveiled the uniforms the team will wear at the world’s biggest international soccer tournament. While the Stars and Stripes have remained faithful to their traditional colors, the new designs blend heritage with a more modern and innovative approach shaped by input from both fans and players.

Working alongside Nike, U.S. Soccer launched a project called DIG (Discover, Ideate and Go), traveling to cities across the country to gather feedback on what supporters wanted from their national team’s next look. The research also extended to the locker room. According to lead designers Natalie McKeough and Yaz Rosete, players Weston McKennie, Matt Turner, Tyler Adams and Ricardo Pepi played a key role in focus groups that helped shape the final designs.

For the designers, player feedback was essential. As Ronnie Stewart, Nike’s Global Product Director, explained, “The players have to feel what they’re wearing. Empowering athletes is at the center of what we do.”

The hidden signature that sets the USMNT apart

The defining feature of the away jersey emerged when Nike asked players how they wanted to feel while wearing the national team shirt. The answers were remarkably consistent: they wanted something “sophisticated, luxurious and with swag.”

With those ideas in mind, designers created a uniform that balances boldness with elegance. From a distance, the shirt appears to be a solid deep navy blue, so dark that it nearly looks black. The hidden detail only reveals itself up close. Under the right lighting, stars woven into the fabric begin to shine, creating a subtle visual effect that transforms the jersey’s appearance.

The sense of exclusivity is enhanced by a chrome-inspired element incorporated into the design. The feature was directly influenced by the jewelry designers noticed many players wearing off the field, allowing the team’s personal style and identity to be reflected on the game’s biggest stage.

US tradition in motion

The home kit, meanwhile, keeps the classic Stars and Stripes theme but introduces a fresh twist. Instead of traditional straight horizontal stripes, the design features curved lines that create the impression of constant movement.

The result is a modern interpretation of a familiar look, preserving the identity of the national team while updating it for a new generation. As McKeough explained, “Updating something that is recognizable is our way of honoring the past while still creating something new.”
