Mexico’s World Cup history includes a little-known mark that puts El Tri alongside the Americas’ traditional heavyweights.

The little-known World Cup stat that puts Mexico in rare company
Mexico, which has played in 17 World Cups, did not earn its first win until the 1962 tournament in Chile, when it defeated Czechoslovakia.
El Tri did not win again until the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, where it claimed two group-stage victories. In 1986, the national team recorded three wins in that year’s edition.

Since 1994, Mexico has always won at least one game at the World Cup, making it the fourth-winningest national team in World Cup history among countries from the Americas.
Only three teams from the region have more World Cup wins than Mexico. Brazil tops the list with 76 victories, Argentina is second with 47 wins, and Uruguay ranks third with 25.
Mexico is fourth on the continent with 17 wins across all of its World Cup appearances.
As a host nation, Mexico has won five games, drawn two, and lost only once in 90 minutes – against Italy in 1970.
