United States names its captain for the 2026 World Cup... and it’s not Pulisic
At a press conference, Mauricio Pochettino announced that the experienced U.S. center back will be the team’s captain at the 2026 World Cup.
The United States’ World Cup debut against Paraguay is getting closer, and this Saturday, ahead of the first of two friendlies Mauricio Pochettino’s team will play against Senegal, the player set to lead the side as captain was announced.
At a press conference, Mauricio Pochettino revealed that he and his coaching staff have chosen Tim Ream to wear the captain’s armband at the upcoming World Cup. The experienced centre-back and defensive leader of the USMNT will take on the responsibility of being the team’s on-field leader and commanding voice.
“Tim is our captain; he is the captain of the USMNT. He was my first captain when I arrived, and we played the first game against Panama in Austin. What I want to say is that I am grateful he is here with us. He is a great captain not only on the field but also off it. He has the experience and ability to be a positive leader,” Pochettino said.
The Argentine coach explained that, despite having several experienced and capable players in the squad, Ream was chosen because of his commitment from the outset. Since Pochettino’s arrival on the USMNT bench, Tim Ream has been his first captain.
“Of all the players we have in the squad, without a doubt, if there is one who deserves it, it is him (Tim Ream). But I still have enormous respect for all the players,” he added.
After being named captain, Tim Ream thanked Pochettino for the opportunity to lead the group at this World Cup, which he sees as the realisation of a dream ahead of what he expects will be his final tournament.
“It is more than a dream come true. I have done everything possible to be part of this group and it is an honour. At the same time, I will seek to help the team. It is the highest honour with this group ahead of the World Cup,” he added.
