Manchester United manager José Mourinho has taken the curious step of doing away with the traditional match day ball boys at Old Trafford in favour of using academy players instead, according to Goal.com.

Explaining the move, which was apparently prompted by the display of the ball boys and girls during the League Cup semi-final against Hull, Mourinho said: “They will be faster and they can help us a little in difficult situations. They have more knowledge of football.”

The Old Trafford board backed the Portuguese’s decision and gave the idea a debut run-out in the match against Liverpool last weekend when players from United's under-16s were deployed.

Match day ball boys and girls have until now been selected by the Manchester United Foundation.
