Scandal grows in Senegal: private parties and extravagant expenses
A scandal has broken out from within the Senegalese national team.

Scandals in Senegal show no sign of stopping. The African side’s elimination at the hands of Belgium has turned everything into a nightmare. First came Pape Gueye’s decision to retire from the national team. Since then, a series of controversies involving members of the Senegalese delegation has come to light: unauthorised private parties, bottles of alcohol, extravagant spending and guests with no connection to the team’s training camp. As if that were not enough, Pape Thiaw did not even have a contract in place just hours before the group-stage match against Norway. It is a surreal situation.
If only Senegal’s exit had been limited to what happened on the pitch. In the hours following the resignation of a key player like Gueye, more incidents have emerged that have only fuelled the tense atmosphere surrounding Senegalese football. According to reports, the delegation’s camp gradually became a venue for parties, private gatherings and scandals unfolding in plain sight.
Players reportedly witnessed officials repeatedly inviting content creators and friends to gatherings featuring bottles of alcohol, expensive gifts and lavish spending. According to the African outlet Sport News Africa, hotel staff complained on numerous occasions about the noise generated by these members of the delegation. All of this took place while the players were preparing for and competing in World Cup matches.
Faced with the apathy and irresponsibility of some staff members, many players were left to look after themselves. According to African media, some even resorted to ordering fast food to the hotel. It was a remarkable situation. But the controversy does not end there. National team coach Pape Thiaw did not have a valid contract just hours before the group-stage match against Norway. He was forced to sign it moments before travelling to the stadium, avoiding a scandal that could have severely damaged Senegal’s World Cup campaign.
Social media are ablaze, and Senegalese fans have expressed their embarrassment at the behaviour of the so-called professionals working with the national team. More players are expected to speak out, while the federation is likely to issue an official statement in an attempt to calm the situation and provide answers. Meanwhile, Senegal is watching the remainder of the World Cup from home following its sporting elimination, with the tournament now overshadowed by a deep sense of institutional embarrassment.
