Morata eclipses Benzema and makes claim for starting position

In the time it takes the French striker two score goals, Morata finds the net three times. Messi is the only player with a better goals per playing time average in LaLiga.

Álvaro Morata once again outshone Karim Benzema in Sunday's game against Villarreal. Despite being used by and large by Zidane as a substitute this season, the striker has edged into the Top 10 scorers for the 2016/17 season. Only Barcelona star, Lionel Messi boasts of a better playing time/goal scoring record in the top flight with the Barça No. 10 on target every 85,9 minutes with the Madrid player on scoring a goal per 92,6 minutes on the field.

Morata's claim for a starting place in the Real Madrid side is significant given that the 24 year old has scored in the past eight games he has featured in.

Benzema's form in the current league campaign has been disappointing with the Frenchman only bagging five goals in the current LaLiga campaign and the striker failing to find the target since the opening game of 2017 (at the Bernabéu against Granada). The player's only salvation comes in the form of his goals in the Copa del Rey (v Sevilla) and the Champions League where he bagged the equaliser on the night against Napoli.

Morata keeps Madrid top

Without Alvaro Morata's LaLiga goals, Real Madrid would find themselves in a hypothetical third place in the table with the forward's strikes being decisive in key games against Athletic and Villarreal.

Benzema and the Champions League

In his defence, Benzema has been a key figure for Zidane when it comes to the UEFA Champions League this season. He fired home the decisive goal in Lisbon and bagged the 1-1 in a impressive performance against Napoli at the Bernabeu. The Frenchman was also on target in the club World Cub as Madrid saw off Mexican opposition in Club America in Japan.
