Uruguay-France

Cavani all-but ruled out against France with Stuani on standby

The PSG forward took no part in Uruguay's training session on Wednesday and it is extremely unlikely he will be fit for the World Cup quarter-finals.

Edinson Cavani has been effectively ruled out of Uruguay’s World Cup quarter-final after failing to participate in training with Óscar Tabárez’s squad just two days before the meeting with France in Nizhny Novgorod.

Cavani scored twice in the 2-1 victory over Portugal to help his side into the last eight but limped off during the second half with a hamstring problem.

The PSG forward was replaced by Cristhian Stuani and it is expected the Girona striker will step in if Cavani fails to recover in time to face Les Bleus on Friday.

Cavani is Uruguay’s leading scorer at the tournament with three goals and his absence would be a huge blow for Tabárez, not least because of his ability to hold up the ball, tie up central defenders and create space for his striker partner Luis Suárez.

However, Stuani enjoyed an excellent season with Primera División new boys Girona, firing the Catalan side to safety and to within a few points of an unlikely berth in Europe next season with 19 goals in 30 appearances.
