Maradona on Messi and co: "This team doesn't deserve the shirt"

Argentina great and World Cup winner Diego Maradona laid into the current Albiceleste set-up after Lionel Scaloni’s side were beaten 3-1 by Venezuela in a friendly in Madrid, likening the experience of watching the game to a horror film.

It was only the second time in 25 attempts that the Vinotinto, who finished at the bottom if CONMEBOL qualifying for the 2018 World Cup with just two wins from 18, had beaten Argentina and that they did so quite deservedly prompted Maradona to lay into the current Albiceleste hierarchy.

I prefer not to watch horror films but I don’t know how the inept bunch who are in charge of Argentina thought they were going to beat Venezuela,” the Cosmic Barrel opined.

Maradona, currently in charge of Dorados in the Liga Ascenso MX, continued: “It hurts me because I feel Argentinean to the core, but with the generation of players like [Oscar] Ruggeri, [Gabriel] Batistuta, [Claudio] Caniggia... the current team don’t deserve to wear the shirt and those players had it tattooed on them. We’d give our lives to see the back of [Claudio] Tapia, who has no idea what he’s doing.”

Tapia took over as president of the Argentinean Football Association in 2017 and will not face a challenge for his post until elections in 2021. “I feel sorry for the Argentinean people, who continue to believe in this liar, and I feel sorry for the players who have to take the consequences when the people that should be doing so are the directors who are giving away the prestige of the Argentina national team,” Maradona concluded.
