REAL MADRID

Real Madrid: More goals against than any other LaLiga club

Real Madrid's unsuccessful season is not only down to their inability to score goals, but also their failure to stop them going in at the other end.

Real Madrid's failure to challenge for major silverware this season is a consequence not only of their goal-shyness, but also their defensive fragility. Indeed, such has been their vulnerability at the back that they have let in more goals in all competitions this term than any other Spanish top-flight club.

Real Madrid overtake Huesca in weekend win over Eibar

In Saturday's 2-1 LaLiga win over Eibar, Madrid conceded for the 62nd time in 2018/19, in what was their 50th game of the campaign. Marc Cardona's strike at the Bernabéu saw Los Blancos overtake bottom club Huesca, whose defence has been breached on 61 occasions (albeit in far fewer matches: 32). Madrid and Huesca are followed by Villarreal (59 in 44), Sevilla (59 in 53) and Levante (59 in 34).

Goals conceded in each competition: LaLiga, Champions League...

Broken down by competition, Real Madrid's goals-against count reads as follows: 37 in LaLiga (an average of 1.19 per game), 10 in the Champions League (1.25), 9 in the Copa del Rey (1.12), 2 in the UEFA Super Cup (2) and 2 in the Club World Cup (1).

Of the 62 goals - the most that Los Merengues have conceded in their first 50 fixtures of a season in the last nine years - Keylor Navas has let in 18 in 17 matches (1.05 per game), Thibaut Courtois has been beaten 42 times in 32 (1.31) and Luca Zidane picked the ball out of the net twice in his only appearance so far (2).
