Barcelona lose Copa final to Valencia: Catalan press reacts
After what happened at Anfield in the Champions League, the Copa del Rey final was seen as a chance for Messi and co. to go out on a high. They didn't.
It was the morning after the night before for Barcelona and their fans. Going into the match as favourites, and with a chance to crow about more success as they look across at the troubles in Madrid. Things didn't quite turn out the way they had expected, though, and there was a sense of déjà vu from the Catalan front pages.
Messi can't prevent another blow for Barça
Three elements seemed to play out in the regional press on Sunday morning. One that the 1-2 loss to Valencia in the Copa del Rey final was yet another confidence hit to an already fragile group. Indeed 'Another blow' was the headline chosen by Mundo Deportivo, with the dejected images of Dembélé, Busquets, Coutinho and Suárez in the foreground. In their secondary titles, they also touched on another of the elements, linking it to the nightmare that took place at Anfield on 7 May and that something needs to be done to fix the current malaise.
Sport, on the other hand, had a single player adorning their cover but in a manner that is contrary to their normal message. 'Messi's on his own' read the headline, as they pointed to a grim first half for Valverde's side that couldn't be rectified despite the Argentine scoring one and hitting the post in the second period. The club's talisman needs help from his supporting cast to ensiure his talents pay dividends.
Confidence for the manager was given after the game by Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu, and this also got plenty of coverage, as the evening saw #valverdeout start to trend on Twitter.
