Coronavirus: Liga MX clubs will readjust wages during Covid-19 pandemic

With Mexico under phase 2 of the coronavirus pandemic and a mandatory quarantine in place until April 30 it is uncertain when the Liga MX will reschedule the remainder of the Clausura 2020.

Due to the drastic situation across the country and the globe, many teams from in the Mexican league have decided to readjust their players' salary in order to pay other employees that need the money the most during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

A couple of days ago Orlegi Group, who own Santos Laguna, Atlas and Tampico-Madero, notified their players that they will only receive a portion of their salary due to the pandemic.

Atlas and Santos the first teams to make this decision

On March 27, Orlegi group released a statement informing everyone about the decision to readjust players' salaries in order to ensure the wages of other employees but they will receive the rest of the money once the Liga MX has a set date to return.

Pumas also readjusted the players salary

In the same way, Pumas released a statement saying the club will follow the Orlegi group's decision because it’s the best solution to the current crisis. Once the Liga MX resumes the players will recover the money that is being used to pay other members of the institution.

Pachuca group joined the initiative

The first division teams of León and Pachuca, as well as Mineros from Zacatecas have also joined the initiative started by Santos Laguna and Atlas. But the Pachuca group stated this will only affect the players in the first team squad with the lower division players set to receive their full salary.

So far only five teams from the first division and two from Ascenso have joined the initiative, but it is expected that in the next few weeks the rest of Liga MX clubs will follow suit.
