Trump signs executive order to reform police brutality in the US

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has signed an executive order that provides police departments with the incentive to adopt reforms following the death of George Floyd.

President Donald Trump signed on Tuesday an executive order aimed at tracking misconduct by law enforcers and creating incentives for departments to improve their practices. The action comes as lawmakers of both parties (Democrats and Republicans) pursue legislation to reform law enforcement as Black Lives Matter protests continue all over the country.

Executive order signed off

Even though Trump signed this new bill he has made it clear that he does not want to support the 'defund the police' call that has gained traction from the nationwide protest movement in the United States.

“Law and order must be further restored nationwide, and your federal government is ready, willing, and able to help,” Trump said during Tuesday’s press conference.

The order also calls for the creation of a national database to allow departments to track potential hires with records of abuse as well as for mental health professionals to respond alongside officers to calls dealing with homelessness, drug addiction and mental illness.

The order does not include a ban on chokeholds, as many activists had demanded, but says the police tactic should only be used if their lives are in danger, “we need to bring law enforcement and communities closer together, not to drive them apart," Trump said.

Trump was directly talking with law enforcement officials and representatives of the families of victims killed by the police to come up with the new reforms. “Your loved ones will not have died in vain,” the president told the family members he met shortly before the news conference.

Donald Trump doesn’t agree with “defunding the police”

The Trump administration’s new order rejects the defunding of police like many protesters have been chanting since the death of George Floyd. “I strongly oppose the radical and dangerous efforts to defund, dismantle and dissolve our police departments.

"Americans know the truth: Without police there is chaos, without law there is anarchy, and without safety there is catastrophe,” said Trump.
