Manchester United and England defender Harry Maguire has been found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery by a misdemeanours court on the Greek island of Soros.

According to talkSPORT, Maguire has been given a 21 month and 10 days prison sentence, suspended on account of it being a first offence.

Maguire involved in brawl

Maguire was on the Greek island of Mykonos for a holiday when he was involved in a bar brawl, in which he allegedly pushed a police officer who had attended the scene to attempt to break up the fight. The officer said Maguire had pushed him so hard he had fallen on his back and required painkilling injections.

Maguire's lawyer disputed the account, saying the player had been kicked and shoved by police officers, who had also verbally abused him, saying "your career is over." The three-member misdemeanour court dismissed Maguire's defence and not-guilty plea.

In the wake of the brawl Maguire was taken to the police station in Mykonos, where the police said he had attempted to bribe them. According to the officers the England star had pleaded with them to be released, saying: "Please, let me go. I am very rich. I can pay. I am the leader of Manchester United." The court held Maguire had attempted to bribe the officers.

Maguire's lawyer said the brawl had started when Maguire had been told his 20-year-old sister had been injected with a date rape drug by a pair of Albanian men, which had caused her to faint immediately.

Maguire named in England squad

Despite the case against Maguire in Greece, Gareth Southgate named the player in his England squad for the Nations League matches against Iceland and Denmark at the start of September. Southgate said he had "insight" into the story which is "very different" to what is being reported.
