Caretaker manager Michael Carrick celebrated his first game in charge at Manchester United with a 0-2 win away at Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday. His side will face a much tougher test on Sunday. They will be up against a Chelsea side who have suffered only one defeat so far this season – losing by the minimum to Manchester City back in September. That was one of just three games in which Thomas Tüchel’s team have dropped points. Chelsea also boast the stingiest defence in all of Europe’s major leagues, having shipped four goals in 12 games – they have conceded just one goal in the whole of November –Burnley’s Matej Vydra having the honour of scoring it.

For United, it’s been quite the opposite – their defending has been so poor it was one of the factors which cost Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job. In 12 games they have conceded 21 goals – that is exactly the same figure conceded by all of the top three - Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City combined. They did hold Chelsea to goalless draws home and away last season however and their last league defeat at Stamford Bridge was back in 2017 so coming away with a result on Sunday is not an impossible task.

There was positive news for Tüchel this week as Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku have been given a clean bill of health and are fit to return. Lukaku has been out recovering from an ankle sprain and was an unused sub in the mid-week Champions League clash with Juventus. Timo Werner and Christain Pulisic have been training as normal and appear to be over their fitness issues. Not so lucky is N’Golo Kanté, who is ruled out with a sprained knee while Mateo Kovacic remains out recovering from a hamstring problem. An even bigger blow is that left-back Ben Chilwell is expected to be out until the New Year and could even require a trip to the operating table after it was confirmed he has suffered an ACL injury.

United have injury concerns of their own. Luke Shaw suffered concussion after taking a blow to the head in the derby last week. Edinson Cavani flew home to Uruguay to continue his recovery from a tendon issue. He has since returned and is back training although he is unlikely to start even if he is declared fit. Raphaël Varane remains out with a hamstring injury and Fred is nearing his return from an ankle injury. Fred could return to the starting XI in London but one player who definitely won’t be making the trip is Harry Maguire who is serving a ban after being sent off against Watford last week.
