Calls for new NFL overtime rules following Chiefs win over Bills

It was a game for the ages as Kansas City overcame Buffalo after regulation time, but with star QB Josh Allen not getting a touch, a bad taste was left.

For the Kansas City Chiefs and any neutral fan, it was a spectacular evening of NFL action. A game, as they say, for the ages, and one that took Patrick Mahomes and co. into the Championship game against the Bengals.

The losing quarterback, Josh Allen, had certainly played his part in the occasion although, given the current rules, was unable to affect the game in any meaningful way after the coin toss for overtime. And that just raised the long-time calls for a review of how games are decided if they are level at the end of regulation time.

Chiefs win stirs overtime debating pot

"It's painful and still going through it. I’m not in a good spot… but I will review it and we'll learn from it, I promise you that. " was a telling comment from Brandon Beane, the general manager of the Buffalo Bills. Aside from the pain, a rules change would have pleased the TV audience, he added.

"At the end of the day, we lost the game the other night. But of course, we would have loved to, I think the TV audience would have loved to have seen Josh and our offense get it back.

"I would definitely love to see it [change to overtime rules] brought back to the table.

I’m not saying I have the exact idea, but I think there's some ways to do it. Without getting into detail, I think there's a way you can do it in the regular season that handles that, but let's do something in the postseason when it's all on the line."

"So maybe there ends up being more ties in the regular season, but let's make sure we give both offenses a chance when the season's on the line," Beane said.

"I'm sure even though it benefited [Kansas] the other night, I'm sure they would be in favor. If you've got Pat Mahomes, you're always going to want to make sure he gets the ball, and we feel the same about Josh."

Given the power that television and advertising has in the game, there is little doubt that ideas are being discussed. It’s not like we haven’t seen major changes before.
