Xavi Hernández has the first chance to unveil his new-look Barça side on Sunday when Atlético Madrid pay their annual visit to Camp Nou. Winter transfer arrivals Ferran Torres, Adama Traoré and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were added last month and have been included in Xavi’s 23-man squad for the game. Also in the list is Ousmane Dembélé, who had been threatened with being blacklisted for the remainder of the season but the coach . Six players remain on the casualty list: Memphis Depay, Ansu Fati, Clément Lenglet, Sergi Roberto, Samuel Umtiti and Eric García.

Only a victory will do for Barça on Sunday afternoon. The team sits fifth in the table on 35 points - one point and one place behind Atleti. Both aspire to finish in the top four and qualify for next season’s Champions League but this season, they face competition from Sevilla and Betis - they are already 10 points adrift of second place, although with a game in hand.

Atleti beat Barça in the reverse fixture in Week 8 which could give them an advantage if the two teams finish the campaign tied on points. Much of that will depend on the result of this game but the rojiblancos go into it with a superior goal difference in the head-to-head figures.

Simeone couldn’t resist a little dig at his opposite number before the game, reminding Xavi of when he trivialised Atleti’s style of sitting deep and waiting in a 2016 documentary.

El Cholo is now able to call on Marcos Llorente and Geoffrey Kondogbia, both of whom have fully recovered from their respective injuries and returned to full training. One player who won’t be making the trip to Barcelona is Antoine Griezmann. The French forward still hasn’t recovered from a hamstring injury and won’t be available to face his old club. Simeone is expected to go 4-4-2 against Barça with Carrasco, De Paul, Koke and Lemar occupying the midfield positions and either Luis Suárez or Correa partnering João Félix up front.
