Five years of failure for the Glazer family with Manchester United
The Red Devils lost 2-1 on aggregate against Atlético Madrid in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League and they have failed to win silverware for the past five years.
The Glazer family acquired Manchester United in 2005 and it was a successful period in the beginning when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge of the club. Since the legendary manager left in 2013 the Premier League club has experienced a tough transition.
The last time they won silverware was in 2017 when Jose Mourinho led the Red Devils to win the UEFA Europa League title and since then they have failed to add more to their trophy case and suffered embarrassing defeats.
Two humiliating results at Old Trafford
The biggest rivalry in the Premier League is between Manchester United and Liverpool. The most recent matchup between both clubs was in October 2021 and Liverpool humiliated the Red Devils at Old Trafford with Mohamed Salah scoring a hat-trick that night, Naby Keita and Diogo Jota found the back of the net to make it 5-0 at the end of the 90 minutes. If it was not enough, Manchester United turned Old Trafford into a nightmare in the past couple of seasons. In October 2020, Tottenham Hotspur came, saw and conquered Manchester United with a 6-1 victory.
Lost back-to-back derbys
In November of 2021, Manchester City defeated the Red Devils 2-0 at Old Trafford as well with Bernardo Silva finding the back of the net and Eric Bailly scoring an own goal. Then in March of 2022 the ‘Citizens’ hosted Manchester United at Etihad stadium and won 4-1. United lost in back-to-back derbys without putting up a fight.
Eliminated from the UEFA Champions League
The latest elimination came in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night at Old Trafford. The Red Devils lost 1-0 to Atlético Madrid in the second leg of the round of 16 and lost 2-1 on aggregate. For the fifth season in a row they are out of contention to win silverware and now they are fighting to qualify to next year’s Champions League.
