‘Flow’ Wins 2025 Best Animated Feature Oscar, beating ‘The Wild Robot’ and ‘Inside Out 2′

Created with a tiny team, a minimal budget, and without a single line of dialogue, the Latvian film breaks the dominance of Disney, Ghibli, and DreamWorks.

Update:

They’ve done it! Latvia has pulled off the impossible, toppling two animation giants—Pixar and DreamWorks. Flow has emerged victorious, taking home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. And there’s no way not to feel happy for Gints Zilbalodis and his deeply personal project. This is a film that spent years in development, created by a team of just 20 people with a budget of $4 million—figures practically unheard of on Hollywood’s red carpets.

The film, which was also nominated for Best International Feature, runs only 83 minutes and contains no dialogue whatsoever. But it didn’t need any words to move audiences—especially those who love cats. Flow follows the journey of a feline protagonist trying to survive in a world without humans, where the water level keeps rising. To make it, the cat must learn to navigate and form bonds with other creatures, eventually calling them friends. Beneath its deceptively simple premise lies an unforgettable adventure that has won the Academy’s heart, beating out strong contenders like Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot.
