“Emilia Pérez” controversies

There was backlash in Mexico about the way elements of Mexican life and culture were portrayed, especially related to drug cartels. Audiard caused caused outrage in the Spanish-speaking world by claiming last year that Spanish is a “language of developing countries,” “poor people,” and “migrants”.

Selena Gómez, who stars in the film, was criticized for not working hard enough to get her Spanish up to scratch, which she herself admitted.

Karla Sofía Gascón’s offensive posts: what did she say?

However, the biggest controversy was provoked by lead actress and Best Actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón, who was forced to apologize after a series of old social media posts, including ones that were racist and offensive, resurfaced. George Floyd, Islam, Muslims, and even some celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Adele, were all targeted.

Social media users shared multiple screenshots of the actress’s posts, which have since been deleted. In one, Gascón described Floyd as a “drug addict swindler,” shortly after his death. In another, she wrote, “Islam is becoming a hotbed of infection for humanity that needs urgent curing.”

Following the uproar over her posts, the actress issued an apology. “I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused pain. As someone who belongs to a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness,” she said in a statement to Variety.

After Gascón’s posts had come to light, Netflix swiftly removed the actress from its promotional campaign, while co-stars Gómez and Zoe Saldaña spoke of their “sadness” and “the magic being gone,” after working with the 52-year-old.

Gascón’s Oscars plan

Despite the controversy, it has been reported Gascón is planning to attend the Oscars ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 2, when she can become the first openly transgender performer to win an Academy Award.

Although Gascón didn’t attend the Oscar nominees dinner, sources have claimed to both People and Variety she will be at the main bash, with Netflix having agreed to pay her expenses. It hasn’t been confirmed whether she will walk the red carpet, do any interviews or sit with the rest of the “Emilia Pérez” contingent, however.
