Update:

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, nestled in the heart of the French mountains near the Italian and Swiss borders, is known for its stunning natural heritage. Its landscape spans snow-capped peaks, serene lakes, and ancient volcanoes. And now, it’s the site of a surprising discovery: a potential gold deposit.

It was a local resident who first alerted the authorities. What he initially believed would be the discovery of a lifetime has turned out to be more of a mirage—at least for now. The government has blocked access to the site, where preliminary evidence (pending drilling, purity analyses, and other assessments) suggests there may be gold worth up to four billion euros.

According to Atelier de France, Michel Dupont, a 52-year-old farmer, made the discovery while walking across his land. “I noticed a shine in the clay,” he recalled. “After digging a bit, I found some gold nuggets. It was incredible—I couldn’t believe they’d been lying there under my feet for so many years.”

If confirmed, it would be the largest gold deposit ever discovered in France. Yet Dupont won’t receive any compensation. The entire operation has been frozen pending official procedures. “They told me they needed to conduct environmental and historical assessments first,” he explained.

Environmentalists are concerned about the potential impact of mining on the region. Local residents remain in the dark about the future of their land, and the government has yet to announce any official mining plans or share findings on the gold’s purity, volume, or economic implications. Estimates suggest there could be as much as 150 tons underground, but the viability of extracting it remains unclear.

Which country has the most gold in the world?

Currently, France has no active gold mines. Despite holding the fourth-largest gold reserves in the world—2,436 tons—all of it comes from foreign sources.

Mali, a former French colony, is rich in gold, with over 850 operational mines producing about 50 tons annually. Yet the country has no national gold reserves. Despite this lucrative output, Mali remains one of the poorest nations in terms of per capita income.
