Update:

Millions of American senior citizens who claim Social Security retirement benefits are due to get their latest monthly check.

Today - Wednesday, July 23 - the Social Security Administration (SSA) is to send out the final batch of payments on its distribution schedule for this month.

Today’s payment date will also see checks distributed to recipients of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and survivor benefits.

Who gets a Social Security check today, July 23?

Of the just under 70 million people who receive retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits across the U.S., most are paid on one of three Wednesdays each month.

Each beneficiary’s designated Wednesday is decided by their date of birth. (Unless they receive survivor pay, or claim retirement based on their spouse’s work. In these cases, the date of birth used is that of the worker who accrued the benefits).

Today, the SSA is to issue checks to beneficiaries whose birthday falls on the 21st to the 31st of each month.

Wednesday payment schedule - July 2025:

  • Weds., July 9: Recipients born between 1st and 10th
  • Weds., July 16: Recipients born between 11th and 20th
  • Weds., July 23: Recipients born between 21st and 31st

Who is paid outside the three-Wednesdays timeline?

  • Certain long-term Social Security beneficiaries

If you started claiming retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits before May 1997, your check is typically paid out on the third of each month, irrespective of your date of birth.

For these long-term beneficiaries, therefore, the payment date for July 2025 was Thursday 3rd.

It’s worth noting, though, that August’s check will be paid a little earlier than usual. As August 3 falls on a Sunday, next month’s distribution date will be brought forward to the nearest working day, which is Friday 1st.

  • SSI beneficiaries

Beneficiaries of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) - a separate SSA scheme for low-income individuals who are over 65 or have a disability - get their check on the first of each month (unless it’s a holiday or weekend day).

As a result, July’s SSI money was sent out on Tuesday 1st.

  • Dual beneficiaries (SSI + regular Social Security)

Over 2.5 million people in the U.S. receive both SSI and one of the SSA’s retirement, SSDI or survivor benefits.

These recipients typically get the former on the first of each month and the latter on the third. This was the case in July - but, as August 3 is a Sunday, they will receive both on the first next month.

Non-Wednesday recipients: July 2025 payments

  • Tues., July 1: SSI beneficiaries
  • Thurs., July 3: Regular Social Sec. beneficiaries since pre-May 1997

Dual beneficiaries: SSI paid on 1st, regular Social Security paid on 3rd

How much Social Security do retirees receive each month?

To be exact, the average Social Security retirement check is currently $2,005.05 per month, according to the latest figures published by the SSA.

The maximum monthly retirement check is $5,108.

How much do other SSA beneficiaries get per month?
