Luigi Mangione, suspected of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has waived his right to an extradition hearing and agreed to be transferred from Pennsylvania, where he was arrested, to New York, where the alleged crime occurred.

The 26-year-old was handed over to New York Police Department officers on the morning of Thursday, December 19. Authorities transported him in a black SUV to a local airport, where they boarded a small plane bound for New York. The trial is expected to take place there.

What has Luigi Mangione been charged with?

Mangione initially faced 11 charges, including first-degree murder with terrorist intent. On Thursday, four additional federal charges were filed: two counts of stalking, murder with the use of a firearm, and using a weapon equipped with a silencer.

When will Luigi Mangione’s trial begin in New York?

As extradition to New York moves forward, Blair County District Attorney Pete Weeks has agreed to suspend charges in Pennsylvania. According to reports, Mangione is scheduled to make his initial appearance in federal court on Thursday afternoon at approximately 2:00 p.m. ET, per a statement from the Southern District of Pennsylvania.

“As alleged, this defendant brazenly shot Mr. Thompson at point-blank range on a Manhattan sidewalk. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with the New York Police Department, is committed to securing justice for this heinous crime,” read the statement.

This may be Mangione’s final public appearance. Magistrate Judge Katharine Parker will preside over the proceedings at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Courthouse. While the trial date remains undetermined, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has indicated that, if convicted, Mangione could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
