In a Sunday showdown against the formidable Milwaukee Brewers, the New York Yankees found themselves in a tense battle that went well beyond the regulation nine innings. It wasn’t until the 11th inning that the Yankees finally notched their first hit of the day, but despite the odds stacked against them, they clawed their way to a thrilling 4-3 victory after 13 grueling innings against the National League Central frontrunners.

Yankees needed 13 innings to drain Brewers

New York had been trailing 1-0 when Oswaldo Cabrera delivered a game-changing moment, breaking up the Brewers’ no-hit bid with an RBI double off Joel Payamps, sparking hope among the fans. The situation looked bleak again in the 12th inning with the Yankees down 3-1, but then came the heroics of Giancarlo Stanton, who crushed a game-tying two-run homer.

As the game stretched into the 13th inning, Anthony Misiewicz held the Brewers at bay, giving the Yankees a shot at victory. Kyle Higashioka seized the moment, driving in Everson Pereira, the automatic runner, with a clutch one-out double off Hoby Milner, securing the Yankees’ escape from a three-game series sweep.

The drama had begun early in the game when Corbin Burnes, the Brewers’ ace, had kept New York hitless through eight gripping innings before being relieved after 109 pitches. The suspense continued in the ninth inning, with Devin Williams throwing a perfect inning before Abner Uribe took the mound. Uribe nearly saw the Yankees break the no-hit barrier, as Anthony Volpe sent a deep drive to right field, only to be thwarted by a spectacular leaping catch from Sal Frelick.

Brewers’ lead over Cubs reduced

Milwaukee had their moments too. Tyrone Taylor drove in the Brewers’ first run with a single in the 11th inning, and the team scored twice in the 12th, with Joey Wiemer’s RBI double shining as a notable highlight.

The duel on the mound was equally captivating. Gerrit Cole, the Yankees’ ace, matched Burnes through the first seven innings, displaying his dominance by allowing just three hits and striking out nine batters without issuing a single walk.

In the grand scheme of the NL Central race, this thrilling victory had major implications. Milwaukee’s lead over second-place Chicago had narrowed to just three games after the Cubs secured a 5-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, making every win and loss all the more crucial in the race for the division crown.
