Long-time NFL exec Brian Rolapp is heading to the PGA Tour, so it looks like he won’t be the one to take over for Goodell when the time comes. So who will?

Update:

Roger Goodell has been the NFL Commissioner since 2006. His current contract extends through the 2027 season, and if he’s to leave in two years, who will be his successor?

The obvious name for some used to be Brian Rolapp, who’s been an executive and vice president within the league for 22 years. However, on Thursday, he shockingly announced he’d be leaving the NFL to become the CEO of the PGA Golf Tour. So, who does that leave?

Potential replacements for NFL Commissioner post Goodell

Rolapp was considered a top candidate for the role - he’s earned over $60 million annually and led the league through media deals, labor negotiations, and global expansion. Recently, Chris Halpin also left, so the options are getting slimmer for an eventual replacement for Goodell.

1. Troy Vincent

Vincent is currently the executive vice president of football operations for the NFL and he also happens to be a former NFL player, bringing unmatched on-field credibility. He’s been an executive since 2014 and is a respected voice on diversity and player issues. He would also be the NFL’s first Black commissioner.

2. Renie Anderson

The NFL’s Chief Revenue Officer, Anderson is a 19-year league veteran with expertise in sponsorships and team economics. Trusted by owners, she’s a strong internal candidate and could be the first woman to lead a major U.S. sports league.

3. Kevin Warren

Currently Big Ten commissioner, Warren has NFL experience with the Minnesota Vikings and a strong media background. Well-connected with owners, he offers a fresh yet familiar perspective, especially if he secures major TV deals for college football.

4. Don Garber

MLS commissioner and former NFL executive, Garber transformed Major League Soccer into a billion-dollar business. His ties to NFL owners and global brand savvy make him a serious option for a partnership- and growth-focused league.

5. Jeff Pash

As the NFL’s longtime General Counsel, Pash knows every corner of league operations. Though controversial due to past disputes, his institutional knowledge and Goodell’s trust make him the safest internal fallback.
