The Jacksonville Jaguars have been bottom feeders in the NFL for the last few years, and after another disappointing season at EverBank Stadium there are some major changes taking place for the season to come.

Extreme makeover: Jacksonville edition

After team owner Shahid Khan told the media he thought that the Jags had the best team assembled in franchise history they finished just 4-13 in what was a disastrous season that saw the face of their franchise get knocked out for the season by a concussion in early December.

Doug Pederson was let go shortly after the season ended and the Jags hit the market in search for a coach to turn things around in J’Ville. Mr. Kahn didn’t take too long to name Liam Coen the new head coach of the Jags, but the hiring was met with heavy criticism after what some considered a goofy introduction to the facility and to the press during his welcome press conference.

Coen makes the interstate switch from Western Florida to Northern Florida as he heads from Tampa Bay where he was offensive coordinator last year, and heads to Jacksonville where he will be the head ball coach. One of his former players, Baker Mayfield, who is coming off the best season of his career expressed his joy in seeing his offensive coordinator get a head coaching job, while admitting he wished Coen stayed in Tampa.

“Obviously, people have their thoughts on how it went down, and I understand the emotional aspect of it, but I’m happy for Liam. We all had a few choice words for him before we actually told him we were happy for him. I can’t be mad at that -- as much as I would want to have him still here.”

Mayfield gives Coen vote of confidence

While Coen seemed to make an impact on Mayfield who passed for 41 TDs, which was tied for second best in the league with Lamar Jackson, the new Jags coach hasn’t had much longevity at any of is jobs. He bounced around five different jobs at the college level before getting hired by the Rams. He spent two years as the assistant WR coach, before getting the assistant QB coach job in LA. Then he split a year after when he was signed to the the offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky. After a year in Lexington he returned to the Rams as their offensive coordinator, then returned to Kentucky for the same job in 2023. The Tampa Bay Bucs came calling last season and after a year there he was hired by the Jags.

If you’re still with me, you can see the continuous cycle that Coen has been in over the last decade and a half. Those in Jacksonville will be hoping that he can turn things around and help Trevor Lawrence convert into one of the best QBs in the league like he did with Baker in Tampa Bay.
