Pittsburgh Steelers make bold roster moves as playoff race heats up

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a pair of notable roster moves, claiming veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen off waivers and parting ways with cornerback Darius Slay.

Thielen arrives in Pittsburgh looking for fresh start

Thielen requested his release from the Minnesota Vikings and hit the waiver wire earlier this week. Pittsburgh put in a claim and landed the two-time Pro Bowler, who has topped 1,000 receiving yards three times in his career.

This season has been a different story. Thielen managed only eight catches for 69 yards across 11 games with Minnesota, a steep drop in production for one of the league’s most reliable receivers over the past decade.

Steelers seek help behind DK Metcalf

Pittsburgh hopes Thielen can add another dimension to an inconsistent passing game. DK Metcalf is the only Steelers receiver with at least 300 receiving yards so far this season, leaving the team thin behind its top target. The offense has relied heavily on young options such as Calvin Austin and Roman Wilson, both of whom have flashed potential but remain limited in overall production.

Mutual parting with Darius Slay

The Steelers also announced that they have mutually agreed to part ways with Slay. The veteran cornerback joined Pittsburgh during the preseason on a one-year deal but never carved out a significant role in the defense.
