Russell Wilson, one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, has joined the Pittsburgh Steelers after being released by the Denver Broncos. Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowl QB and former Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks. The Steelers announced the signing of Wilson on their social media handles, welcoming him to the team.

According to reports, Wilson’s deal with the Steelers is a team-friendly one-year contract. The contract also includes the Broncos paying $38 million of his salary, making it a win-win scenario for the Steelers and Broncos.

Wilson’s addition to the Steelers roster is a big boost for the team, as he is known for his excellent decision-making, leadership, and ability to make plays under pressure.

Wilson recently met with the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers after the Broncos permitted him to engage in talks with other teams.

The quarterback’s release has cost the franchise a record $85 million in dead money.

The interest of both parties

After releasing QB Mitch Trubisky (who went to the Buffalo Bills) and with the upcoming contract expiration of his backup Mason Rudolph, the Steelers lacked players in that position.

The Pittsburgh franchise had kept its hopes on Kenny Pickett, who was selected in the first round in 2022, as its starting quarterback. During the final stretch of last season, he suffered an ankle injury. Pickett threw for 2,070 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions in 2023.

During his time with the Denver Broncos, Wilson had an inconsistent performance with a 4-11 record in his first season with 15 starts, achieving 16 touchdowns and 13 turnovers. Last year, he went 7-8 and was ultimately benched for the team’s final two games. He totaled 6,594 passing yards with 42 touchdowns and suffered 19 interceptions.
