Update:

Patrick Mahomes' teammate, DeAndre Hopkins, spoke after the Chiefs' win against the Buffalo Bills that gave them a ticket to the Super Bowl, where he commented that the quarterback was “the villain” for fans, just like US sporting legends Tom Brady and Michael Jordan.

Hopkins told Michael Silver of The Athletic that everybody has to choose a team they go against or that they feel is getting help from someone, everybody has to choose a villain, and it’s easy to choose someone who’s winning as much as our guy is.

How can Patrick Mahomes be the villain? The same way Tom Brady could be, and the same way Michael Jordan was. Why do people still talk about MJ pushing off (before hitting the game-winning shot over Bryon Russell in the 1997-98 NBA Finals) almost 30 years later? Because he’s one of the greatest ever to do it, and when he won his sixth, (some) people were tired of watching him win.”

Mahomes creating his own dynasty

Brady led a dynasty in the NFL with the New England Patriots, winning 3 Super Bowls between 2001 and 2004. The same thing goes for Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, whose dominance in basketball led many to question whether or not such success was healthy for the sport as a whole.

While the two names were adored, plenty loathed their success, with hatred sprouting from the jealousy associated with serial winning.

As for Mahomes, he is one win away from his fourth title and he’s not even 30-years-old yet: there’s plenty of time for him to cement himself as an all-time great and truly become an American villain.
