Canelo embraces a potential rematch with Bivol or Beterbiev after the Munguia fight

The Guadalajara native fighter admitted that the Bivol-Beterbiev winner is a real possibility after his fight against Munguia on the Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Update:
The Guadalajara native fighter admitted that the Russian is a real possibility after his fight against Munguia on the Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Saul Alvarez will take on Jaime Munguia in an all-Mexican clash on the Cinco de Mayo weekend. However, Canelo is already thinking about the future and another mega bout could take place next. The undisputed super middleweight champion said he’s considering going up to 175 pounds again to face the winner of the June 1 clash between Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.

That would certainly be a great matchup and fans would be happy to see Canelo face either fighter. In any case, whoever wins that fight will become the undisputed king at light heavyweight and the Mexican could be motivated enough to try to capture all the belts in that division.

If Bivol comes out on top, there would probably be a double reason for Canelo to challenge the Russian. Bivol defeated him in 2022 when both men fought at 175, so he would have the chance to avenge his loss and become champion in another weight class.

“There is always the possibility of having a rematch with Dmitry Bivol. Why not? That fight. I would love to have that fight”, he said.

“I’m just focused on this fight [right now with Munguia]. I go fight by fight. But you know, if there is something interesting for me at 175 pounds, why not?”.

Canelo not interested in Benavidez

The other big fight that many boxing fans would like to see Canelo getting involved in is the David Benadivez one. The Mexican Monster is a young, hungry, and undefeated talent and he has been demolishing most of his opponents so far.

Although Benavidez is a bigger fighter than Canelo, he has proven he can fight at his best at super middleweight, although his body would probably feel better at light heavyweight.

After defeating Demetrius Andrade in his last fight, Benavidez has been calling for a fight with Canelo, but Eddy Reynoso’s fighter hasn’t shown lots of interest in facing him. It was recently revealed that Benavidez is open to a rehydration clause in the contract, but Alvarez doesn’t see many benefits in putting weight conditions on Benavidez.

“Yeah, [a rehydration clause] is a lose-lose situation because, you know, after the fight, they are going to say ‘it was because of this”, he said to BoxingScene.

“And then what? Then you’re going to talk about that clause. When I beat him, they are going to say it was because of the clause, nothing to do with that fight”, he stated.

The only possibility for Alvarez to accept a fight with Benavidez is if there’s a lot of money being offered to him, indicating that it would take between $150-200 million to make the clash possible.
