Estados Unidos Update:

Protests in Los Angeles show no signs of slowing down, and the situation is becoming increasingly complex. The city’s Police Department has announced a second consecutive night of curfews, while Mayor Karen Bass is working to ensure support for all residents.

“They’re people” says Garcia

Things have grown so serious that the demonstrations are now drawing the attention of athletes – especially those with ties to Los Angeles, like welterweight boxer Ryan Garcia. The fighter took to X to reveal he had voted for Donald Trump, but expressed firm opposition to how ICE is treating immigrant workers.

“I may have voted for Trump, but I can’t stay silent about what’s happening with ICE in LA. These aren’t just “illegals” or statistics they’re people,” Garcia wrote on X. “Hardworking immigrants, especially Mexicans, who pay taxes, raise families, build our communities, and are part of the people we love. Ripping them away from their homes is not just policy it’s pain. We can have borders without losing our humanity.”

Known as “King Ry,” Garcia was born in Victorville, California, but now lives in Los Angeles. His hometown lies about 90 miles northeast of where the recent protests have taken place.

When is Ryan Garcia’s next fight?

All signs point to 2026 as the year of Garcia’s return to the ring. The boxer underwent surgery on his right hand in early June, and Oscar De La Hoya – president of Golden Boy Promotions – has voiced support for Garcia taking the rest of the year off to recover. The goal is to focus on a comeback next year following his loss to Rolly Romero in Times Square.

Garcia’s career has recently stalled due to injuries and doping suspensions. The 26-year-old was banned from boxing for a year after testing positive for ostarine following his bout with Devin Haney in April 2024.
