Ben Foster retires from football: Wrexham goalkeeper hangs up his gloves
The veteran stopper will be one of the stars of the upcoming season of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ but has now called time on his playing career.
Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster has announced his retirement from professional football, calling time on a career that began more than two decades ago.
Foster was a regular in the Premier League for much of his career, playing for Manchester United, Watford and West Bromwich Albion in the top flight.
Last season he made the sensational switch to non-league side Wrexham as the Red Dragons pushed for promotion to League Two. He made headlines with a series of impressive late-season performances as the club, the focus of Amazon documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, finally returned to the Football League.
Why has Ben Foster retired?
Foster, who turned 40 earlier this year, made the surprising decision to drop down three divisions to return to former club Wrexham last season. He was a part of one of the most famous seasons in the club’s history, but has struggled this campaign.
In announcing his decision, Foster said: “The honest truth is that my performances this season haven’t reached the level I demand of myself and I feel that now is the right time to retire.
“At the forefront of my mind when making this decision, was not only what was best for me but also the Club, and making the decision now gives the Club every opportunity to assess their options before the window closes.”
However Foster will retain a close connection with the club that he first joined in 2005 as a 21-year-old.
“Wrexham will always have a special place in my heart,” Foster said.
