Against Club León, it’s not only three points that are at stake for Monterrey; Víctor Manuel Vucetich’s men can also go down in history. A win for the Liga MX regular-season leaders would be their eighth in a row, equalling their club record for consecutive victories.

In the 77 years of Monterrey’s existence, they’ve only managed eight wins on the spin once before, in the 1963-64 season. Under the command of Roberto Scarone, Rayados won in successive games against Irapuato, Chivas, Atlante, Nacional, Oro, Necaxa, Toluca and León - but the streak was not enough to earn them the title. Indeed, they finished down in third, five points behind champions Chivas Guadalajara.

We’re not getting ahead of ourselves - Monterrey boss

Asked about Monterey’s winning run in the Clausura 2023, head coach Vucetich was refusing to get carried away, insisting that his side’s sole focus for now is ensuring that their good displays translate into direct qualification for the postseason playoffs.

“The streak is the result of the team doing the right things,” he said. “The players are working together and showing a good attitude. Despite losing the opening game [of the tournament], there was a good reaction and that’s really positive. [Winning seven games on the trot] is a consequence of a job well done on the pitch, of fighting hard in difficult matches and battling together to get the result.

I think the players deserve great credit. But as we’ve always said, we’ll just take each game as it comes and never get ahead of ourselves. We’ve played eight games and there’s a long way to go yet. We haven’t achieved anything and we’re just carrying on towards our main objective, which is to qualify [automatically for the playoffs] as one of the top four. As a result of our good work, we’ve put together this special run.”
