EURO 2024
Cristiano Ronaldo overtakes Erling Haaland after brace for Portugal
Ronaldo scored a double in Portugal’s 5-0 thrashing of Bosnia on Monday.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace against Slovakia on Saturday helped Portugal qualify for Euro 2024 next summer. The Al Nassr striker scored twice again against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday to overtake Erling Haaland as the top scorer in 2023 with 40 goals.
On Monday, he set Portugal on the road to victory with a brace in the first 20 minutes of the match. First, he converted a penalty and then finished off a great move by João Félix, who went on a fine run before assisting the former Real Madrid man to score his second of the evening.
5-0 at halftime
With the party already in full swing, Portugal finished the game off before half-time with three more goals from Bruno Fernandes, João Cancelo and João Félix. The Barcelona forward added the icing on the cake with an outside-of-the-foot finish to add to his recent tally for both club and country.
Playoffs for Bosnia
On the hour mark, Ronaldo left the field to a standing ovation, while Bosnia’s defeat leaves them with no chance of going to the European Championship through direct qualifying, but they are guaranteed a playoff spot thanks to their performance in the Nations League, where they won their group.
