Croatia vs Brazil: preview

Croatia

The Croats edged out Japan in the last 16 on Monday, beating the Samurai Blue on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Al Janoub Stadium. It’s the third time in their last five World Cup knockout ties that the 2018 runners-up have progressed on spot-kicks.

A country of just four million people, Croatia now have the chance to reach the World Cup semi-finals for the third time already since their tournament debut in 1998. By comparison, England - whose is population is 55 million - are currently attempting to reach the last four for the second time in that period.

Brazil

Later on Monday, Brazil thumped South Korea 4-1 to set up Friday’s last-eight clash with Croatia. Tite’s men scored all four goals in a first-half blitz at Stadium 974, and have now reached at least the quarter-finals at each of the last eight World Cups.

The Brazilians have never lost to Croatia, a side they have met twice previously at World Cups. The five-time champions beat the Kockasti 1-0 at Germany 2006, before winning 3-1 as tournaments hosts in 2014.

Croatia vs Brazil: prediction

As any England fan will tell you, you write Croatia off as tired at your peril. Nevertheless, it feels significant that Zlatko Dalic’s men had to slog it out for 120 minutes plus penalties, while Brazil’s tie was done and dusted well before half time. With the Koreans out of sight, Tite was able to substitute key men such as Neymar and Vinícius Júnior during the second half.

The bookmakers are confident that Brazil will reach the semi-finals; so are we.

Prediction: Croatia 1-3 Brazil

Who is the referee for the quarter-final clash?

FIFA, world football’s governing body, is yet to announce the match officials for the game at Education City Stadium.
