It has long been billed as the biggest game in the English calendar, a rivalry which dates back so long that many don’t even remember how it all started. Manchester United and Liverpool are the two most successful clubs in English football history with nothing between them in terms of honours - United have 66 major titles in their trophy room, Liverpool, 65. The two north west giants have a combined 39 league titles between them, so it’s surprising to say the least that both of them will be going into Monday’s clash at Old Trafford, the third game of the season, looking for their first win.

Even at this early stage of the campaign, no one could have imagined that United would be where they are - at the wrong end of the table after two defeats, including a 4-0 drubbing to Brentford - a side enjoying only their second season in the top flight in 74 years. Only West Ham’s 0-2 defeat to Brighton has ensured that Ten Hag’s team won’t be facing Liverpool as the team occupying bottom place - they moved up a place to 19th on goal difference.

Liverpool’s start to the new season has been equally as disappointing. Challengers last year having chased City down to the wire only to lose the league by one point, they have drawn both of their games so far and are only just above United in the table in 15th.

Klopp’s team thrashed United home and away last season but received a taste of their own medicine when the two clubs met during the pre-season - a 4-0 defeat to United in Bangkok in July served as a reminder that the form book and recent results have no bearing on this fixture, even in a friendly.

The three most recent meetings produced 15 goals in total but in general, meetings between United and Liverpool during the past decade have been close, low-scoring contests - four out of the last 15 ended without any goals.

It could go either way on Monday night but neither can really afford another negative result.

Manchester United vs Liverpool team news and injury updates

United strengthened their midfield with the addition of Casemiro at the weekend but with paperwork and other formalities still to be completed, the former Real Madrid player won’t make his debut against Liverpool. Anthony Martial returned to training last week after missing the first two games with a hamstring injury sustained during pre-season. Raphaël Varane started both the Brighton and Brentford games on the bench but he could return to the XI in place of Harry Maguire. Otherwise, United are at full strength.

Unlike Liverpool whose injury woes had Klopp wondering if witchcraft was at play in the run-up to their last game, a 1-1 draw at home to Palace. That game was marred by Darwin Núñez’s sending-off on his Anfield debut, he is suspended and will play no part in Monday’s game. The injuries have been stacking up for Klopp, especially in midfield with Thiago still sidelined with a hamstring issue while Oxlade-Chamberlain unavailable for the next few weeks and Curtis Jones is still out. Naby Keita has been under the weather and was an unused sub against Palace but could return to the side. Diogo Jota missed practically all of the pre-season and is ruled out, as is second-choice keeper Caoimhín Kelleher so Adrián will provide back-up for Alisson again. There have been question marks over Roberto Firmino’s fitness, he only returned to training at the end of last week and could start on the bench. In defence, Konaté is recovering from a knee injury but Joe Gomez appears to be fully fit once again and an option in the starting line-up.
