Real Madrid’s worrying record with upcoming Clásico referee

Alejandro Hernández Hernández will officiate the fifth Clásico of his career this Sunday (10:15 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) at the Lluís Companys Stadium. So far, the record in the four previous encounters between Real Madrid and Barcelona under his watch is evenly balanced: two draws—both in his most recent appearances—along with one win for each team.

Hernández Hernández, a referee from the Canary Islands and one of the most criticised by a sector of Madrid supporters, oversaw his first Clásico during the 2015/16 season. Real Madrid won that match 2-1 at Camp Nou, although Sergio Ramos was sent off.

Clásico referee oversaw late Messi winner

The following season, he took charge of his second Clásico, this time at the Santiago Bernabéu. Barcelona came out on top once again, with Leo Messi scoring a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

The next two Clásicos refereed by Hernández Hernández ended in draws. After officiating four consecutive editions of the fixture between 2016 and 2019, he now returns to the biggest stage nearly six years later.
