Argentina had another night to remember in recent times with the huge triumph at the Maracaná, thanks to Nicolás Otamendi’s goal. The national team celebrated in grand style alongside their fans after the final whistle. However, coach Lionel Scaloni threw cold water on the entire country when he cast doubt on his continuity at the helm of the world champion.

Scaloni sows doubt in Argentina

“I have many things to consider during this time. These players have given us a lot. I need to think a lot about what I want to do. It’s not a farewell or anything else.”

Scaloni won the Copa América in 2021 and just over a year later became the champion in Qatar 2022. Now, his team leads the standings in the qualifiers with five victories in six games and every gear appears to be functioning. With this in mind, he is the leading candidate to win the Copa América again in 2024.

“The bar is set very high, and it’s challenging to continue with the pressure. I need to think during this time; I will tell the president, and I will tell the players. This team needs a coach who has all the possible energy and is in good shape,” he said to a surprised press room.

Copa América, World Cup

In September 2022, two months before the World Cup, Chiqui Tapia confirmed the renewal of Scaloni’s contract until 2026. In other words, he was confirmed as the coach for the World Cup in that year, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, now even his presence in the friendly matches in March is in doubt, and the Copa América follows in the summer.

Once the players’ on-field celebration faded, TyC Sports cameras captured an image where Scaloni posed with his entire coaching staff to take a photograph that now carries a hint of farewell. There are almost four months left until Argentina’s next match, and the door is open to a departure that would be truly unexpected.
