Club América’s weekend win over Tijuana saw Las Águilas complete a year without losing at the Estadio Azteca - a streak that has even taken the club’s head coach by surprise.

América cannot let up, says boss Ortiz

Speaking to Mexican media outlet TUDN, América boss Fernando Ortiz said: “It’s not something I’d expected to manage, but it’s great to be able to bring up a year [without defeat at home].

“I don’t know whether I’d describe myself so much as being happy at the unbeaten run itself, as being pleased about what it means for the beliefs you hold when you roll your sleeves up each day.

“From these results that everyone’s seeing, there’s a message that you can take away and convey to your players. You’ve also got the responsibility to carry on in this vein, and avoid any trace of complacency in the work you do.”

Pachuca the last team to beat América at home

América, whose 2-1 victory on Sunday left them third in the Clausura 2023 regular-season standings, haven’t lost at their home stadium since a 3-1 defeat to Pachuca in February 2022.

Home form must be translated into trophies, says Ortiz

However, above and beyond América’s undefeated streak at the Azteca, what Ortíz is most concerned about is turning these results into silverware. The 45-year-old is focused on delivering the 14th Liga MX title in Los Azulcremas’ history.

“The way forward is to keep on working hard and believing, and to go on and be crowned champions - that’s the most important thing,” he told TUDN.

América’s unbeaten Azteca sequence

Since going down to Pachuca at the Azteca 12 months ago, América have played 22 competitive home games - all in the Liga MX - winning 14 and drawing eight.
