Since its formation in 1992, only seven clubs have won the Premier League. Manchester United and Arsenal were the top two teams in England during the Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger years, before Manchester City and Liverpool started challenging.

José Mourinho had a spell in between it all when he took over at Chelsea and led them to a successful period.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have turned their clubs into formidable forces and in most other seasons Liverpool’s 92 points would have seen them lift the trophy at the end of the season just gone.

Despite City’s exit from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid, they were able to return to league action and record emphatic wins over Newcastle and Wolves to keep them in the driving seat as we entered the final day of the 2021-22 season when they were crowned champions at home against Aston Villa.

Klopp wins league with Liverpool

In 2019-20, Klopp lifted his first Premier League title with Liverpool, their only title since the Premier League began in 1992. Guardiola’s City have been the dominant side in the league in recent years.

City have won four Premier League titles in the last five years. Their first Premier League title came in 2011-12, as Sergio Agüero scored an unforgettable 94th minute winner against QPR to snatch the title from Manchester United’s hands.

Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City and Liverpool are the seven teams to have won the Premier League. Of the six clubs mentioned, only Blackburn are currently playing their football outside the Premier League.

The remaining 14 teams in the Premier League have yet to win the league. Tottenham and Newcastle have both come close to lifting the league title but eventually fell away. In the 1995-96 season, Manchester United finished four points ahead of second-place Newcastle, a Kevin Keegan team full of attacking flair.

Guardiola and Klopp have taken Premier League football to a new level and it remains to be seen if we will have a new champion next May.

Both City and Liverpool have added firepower to their attacks with the signings of Erling Haaland and Darwin Núñez.

World Cup season

The demands placed on the 2022-23 season by the World Cup have impacted each stage of the campaign from start to finish.

The new Premier League season starts eight days earlier than the previous campaign due to planning around the World Cup. The first fixture, between Crystal Palace and Arsenal, is scheduled for 5 August 2022.

The Premier League will end on the later date of Sunday, 28 May 2023, a week later than the 2021-22 campaign ended.
