Who could replace Yon De Luisa as President of the FMF, the Mexican Soccer Federation?
De Luisa will not continue in his role with the FMF. It is now time to find a successor - but who is the main candidate?
When it rains, it pours. The Mexican Football Federation is about to experience a staggering change over the next days, weeks and months. Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino guided the team to their worst finish at a World Cup for 7 editions, not being able to take his side out of the Group Stages, having drawn to Poland, lost to Argentina and beaten Saudi Arabia in Qatar.
His last game came as Mexican fans packed their bags and got an early flight home from the Gulf country, and since then, Diego Cocca has been announced in a decision that took longer than light to reach Earth from Pluto and with a list of candidates that kept falling off the paper and into the void.
Everyone from Marcelo Bielsa to Miguel Herrera was touted as the new ‘number one candidate’ but when it came to it, the ex-Tigres boss was the man chosen to lead Mexico’s young and exciting squad to a ‘home’ World Cup in 3 years’ time.
When will the new FMF President be announced?
The Mexican Football Federation announced in a statement that Yon de Luisa would not run for reelection as head of the organisation. His term will therefore end in May, when a new president will take over. De Luisa will continue in his role until then.
“Today, the president of the Mexican Football Federation, Yon de Luisa, informed all members of the Owners’ Assembly of his decision not to run for reelection as president of the FMF for the term 2023-2026, in order for the new occupant of the position to be able to adjust to the new visions and objectives of the FMF.
“The next Owners’ Assembly is scheduled to take place in May. In the meantime, Yon de Luisa will remain in his role as the head of the FMF,” the statement reads.
