Who is going to manage Club América? The Mexican side are still searching for a head coach
Las Águilas have run out of options for a new head coach after negative responses from all of their preferred candidates.
Club América are struggling in their search for a new head coach ahead of the Apertura 2023 tournament. Fernando Ortiz walked away and was then announced as manager of Monterrey, something which took the Águilas board by surprise, and the club now find themselves without a shortlist of candidates with less than a month to go until football returns.
The exit of Ortiz after the club’s semi-final elimination to Chivas, the first names that popped up were Javier Aguirre, Diego Alonso and Juan Carlos Osorio, as well as André Jardine. It was a substantial list of coaches, but little by little the options have dried up as the majority of them have rejected the role.
Which managers did Club América try to sign?
Diego Alonso was option number one. However, the Uruguyan, who was the champion of Liga MX with Pachuca, declined the offer from América as he wanted a move to Europe after having taken on the Uruguayan National Team in Qatar.
At the same time, the board were looking into the possibility of bringing in Javi Aguirre, but ‘el Vasco’ also declined and instead opted to renew his deal with Spanish side Mallorca.
Another one of the options was Juan Carlos Osorio, but the Colombian preferred to stick to the task in hand in Egypt, sending Santiago Baños home empty handed. The only name remaining on the list is, or was, André Jardine. However, journalist César Luis Merlo has revealed that the club have made no approach to the Atlético San Luis manager and that the talks have reached an impasse, with the sporting project, or lack thereof, being a particular stumbling block.
Will Club América sign any new players?
As for the squad, it has been made known that the club have signed Kevin Álvarez since Guillermo Almada, Pachuca’s current manager, revealed the information. Las Águilas, however, are yet to confirm the deal.
As well as this deal, it seems that Federico Viñas could be on his way to León, while Jonathan Dos Santos could remain at the club and Pedro Aquino could leave. In the case of Diego Valdés, Rayados are looking at him as a potential option but the directors value the player at $18 million.
What is certain is that the upcoming days and weeks are going to be crucial for Club América as they look to prepare something, anything, before the season begins all over again.
