Veteran Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has sparked fresh conversation about his future after acknowledging that retirement is drawing increasingly closer. With more than two decades at the highest level, the longtime shot-stopper admitted that following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he could bring his chapter with both the Mexican national team and professional soccer to a close.

“Could happen”

In an interview with TUDN, Ochoa conceded that saying goodbye is a very real possibility. While he admitted it would be an emotionally complex moment, he said he feels prepared to face it. “Yes [retiring from El Tri], and from my career as well, it could happen,” the keeper said, emphasizing that both his body and his family are ready for that step. “It’s difficult, no doubt, but in my case it won’t be as hard because I’ve enjoyed this for so many years… so you leave at peace.”

The 40-year-old, capped 151 times by Mexico, stressed that his departure would come with a sense of calm, confident that he has given everything he had on the field. For Ochoa, retirement would not mean unfinished business, but rather the natural conclusion of a remarkably successful journey.

When asked about the next generation of Mexican goalkeepers, the veteran was clear in pointing out that the rise of young talent is simply part of the sport’s natural cycle. He acknowledged the pressure faced by those trying to establish themselves with the national team, but made it clear he does not view that competition as a personal threat.

Despite the increasingly competitive landscape, Ochoa reaffirmed his ambition to remain a key figure on the road to the 2026 World Cup. His competitive mindset, he insisted, remains fully intact. “From the moment I started, I’ve always demanded the maximum from myself, and I’ll continue to do so until the very last day,” he said.

Finally, the goalkeeper made it clear that he is prepared for any scenario. If he is called upon as the starter, he will respond with experience and authority; if not, he will embrace a different role with total professionalism. His stance reflects the maturity of a player who understands the rhythms of the game - and is preparing to say goodbye on his own terms.
