As the Argentina players get their 2026 FIFA World Cup up and running against Algeria, you may spot something a little different on the famous – iconic in retro – jersey.

The reigning world champions are one of only seven teams wearing a special version of the tournament patch, giving their sleeves an extra touch of gold before a ball is even kicked. Think of it as FIFA’s version of a VIP wristband, based on recent history.

Why Argentina have a gold World Cup patch in 2026

Most teams at the World Cup wear a standard tournament logo patch on the sleeve. Depending on the color of the jersey, that patch appears with either a black or white background for contrast. FIFA’s design team have clearly been busy. Former world champions, however, get a gold-accented version.

That exclusive club includes Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Germany, France, Spain and England. Italy would have qualified for the gold patch too, but the four-time champions failed to reach the tournament.

For Argentina, though, there is an extra twist.

Not only do Lionel Scaloni’s side wear the gold champions’ patch, they also carry the distinction of being the defending World Cup winners after lifting the trophy in Qatar in 2022. In other words, they are wearing the football equivalent of a championship belt while everyone else is trying to take it from them. Talk about extra motivation for opponents.

The new FIFA sleeve badges explained

The sleeve has become even busier at this World Cup because FIFA has introduced several new collectible patches linked to future trading cards. Some players wear special badges recognizing achievements such as a World Cup debut, previous Golden Boot awards, Golden Glove honors, or appearances in five or more World Cups.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi, for example, qualifies for the rare “Legacy” designation reserved for players with five or more World Cup appearances.

As for Argentina’s gold tournament patch, its meaning is simple: it marks the nation as one of football’s World Cup winners. It is a small detail – and easy to miss from the stands - but a pretty effective reminder that the team wearing it arrived in North America with a trophy in its recent past... and a target on its back, sorry, chest.
