Will Neymar play at the 2026 World Cup? Brazil’s March friendlies give a clue but not everyone is convinced
With fitness concerns, selection doubts and other injuries reshaping Brazil’s attack, Neymar’s path to 2026 remains uncertain but very much alive.

Brazil’s March friendlies were supposed to offer clarity. Instead, they have only deepened the debate around Neymar’s place in the 2026 World Cup.
Left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s latest squad, Neymar remains on the outside looking in, still battling the physical setbacks that have defined the past three years of his career. And, to be fair, the message from the Brazil coach has been consistent: only fully fit players will be considered. Right now, Neymar does not meet that threshold.
But the conversation refuses to go away and it’s a question being brought up in chats with players while on international duty this weekend.
“For me, he is a player who makes the difference. I played with him, I learned a lot from him. I know him – he’ll be ready, he’ll be there.”

Ronaldo and Mbappé back Neymar for World Cup 2026
Another legendary compatriot, Ronaldo Nazário, has publicly backed the forward, arguing that Brazil should not overthink the decision. If Neymar is fit, he goes. Not as the undisputed leader anymore, but as a technically decisive option who can change games in moments. That sentiment seems to reflect a wider feeling in Brazil that experience and talent still matter on the biggest stage.
There is also growing support from outside the country. Kylian Mbappé, who knows Neymar well from their time together at PSG, admitted he “can’t imagine a World Cup without him,” while still acknowledging that Ancelotti’s final call will be decisive.
Circumstances may also tilt things in Neymar’s favor. Injuries to Rodrygo and Estêvão have weakened Brazil’s depth in attacking areas, potentially opening a tactical door if Neymar can prove his fitness in time.

• Neymar will follow a specific schedule, managing his workload to stay fit
•Ancelotti will announce the squad for the WC on May 18. Until then, there will be 14 matches for Santos… Neymar is set to play… pic.twitter.com/lbg0lTDEf8
The situation is now simple, even if the outcome is not: Neymar does not need to convince anyone of his talent. He only needs his body to cooperate.
If it does, he will be there. If it doesn’t, Brazil may finally have to move on.
