When Moise Kean stepped on to the pitch in the Sánchez Pizjuán on Tuesday night he became the first player born in the 21st century to debut in the Champions League. The 16-year-old forward, who was born on February 28, 2000, came on for the final stages of Juventus’ 3-1 victory over Sevilla, replacing Miralem Pjanic in the 84th minute.

First to feature in Serie A

Kean also holds the record for being the first player born in the new millennium to debut in one of Europe’s top divisions after he featured for Juve against Pescara last Saturday. The forward has been called up to the senior squad to cover for the absences of strikers Gonzalo Higuaín, Paulo Dybala and Marko Pjaca.

Babayaro double

Three players have debuted in Europe’s elite club competition at a more tender age than Kean. Celestine Babayaro holds the dubious distinction of being both the youngest player to feature in the Champions League at 16 years two months and 25 days for Anderlecht against Steaua, and also the youngest to be sent off, in the same game.

Alen Halilovic played for Dinamo Zagreb at 16 years, four months and six days and Youri Tielemans, also of Anderlecht, did so at 16 years, four months and 25 days when he started against Olympiacos in October 2013.
