Wes Morgan becomes first Jamaican to score in Champions League
The captain opened the scoring as Leicester beat Sevilla at The King Power Stadium to become the first of his countrymen to net in Europe's elite competition
Wes Morgan, Leicester City's towering centre half, bundled the ball over the line from a Mahrez cross to open the scoring against Sevilla. In doing so, the man who held the Premier League trophy aloft at the King Power Stadium in May, became the first Jamaican to score in the Champions League.
Jamaican me crazy
'Big Wes', as he is affectionately known, made his international debut for the Reggae Boyz back in 2013, shortly after he joined Leicester City from East Midland rivals Nottingham Forest. At 29, Morgan dipped his toe in the water of international football at a relatively late stage. That said, he has still managed to pit himself against some giants of the game. Morgan played in Jamaica's campaign at the 2015 Copa America in Chile, including a 1-0 defeat to Lionel Messi's Argentina.
Nottingham roots
Morgan grew up on the other side of the Atlantic ocean to the nation he represents, in Nottingham. Rejected by Notts County as a teenager, he fell out of the professional game, and turned out for non-league Dunkirk FC, who play in the shadow the brutalist Imperial Tobacco factory on the outskirts of the city.
Nottingham, alleged setting for the escapades of Robin Hood and his Merry Men, is a natural companion to legendary figures. In both Leicester and Jamaica, Wes Morgan fits that billing.
