Not-so-super Depor on worst run in Primera División history

The draw against Las Palmas at the weekend left Clarence Seedorf's side on 20 points, worse off than 2012-13 and with one foot in Segunda.

With just nine games remaining of the 2017-18 season and after Levante’s resurgence under Paco López it seems only a miracle will keep Deportivo in Primera División this season.

The defensive errors remain, the team is not scoring goals and the club’s punt on Clarence Seedorf to turn things around has backfired spectacularly, the Dutchman chalking up the worst start to a coaching takeover at Depor in 50 years.

Depor have now gone three months without winning a game and on Saturday against Las Palmas matched their worst-ever winless run in the top flight of 14 games without tasting victory. With just 20 points on the board after 29 games, Seedorf’s side are worse off at this stage of the season than their previous worst top-flight campaign in 2012-13 when they had 23. Before the three points for a win system was introduced, Depor went down in 1964-65 with 15 points but would have accrued 21 by this stage under the current format.

Seedorf failing to turn Depor's season around

Depor have conceded 60 goals already this season, just one short of the total they shipped in each of the past two seasons when they managed to stay up. Although they have tightened up under Seedorf, it will be a miracle if that total is not breached by a considerable distance this campaign.

At the other end, Depor have scored 26 times this season but have managed only two in their last seven under Seedorf, one of which was an own goal by the other side.

Although Seedorf arrived to rescue the situation after the sacking of Cristóbal Parralo, the former Netherlands international has got off to the worst start of any Depor boss since 1966, with three points from a possible 21. Only Enrique Orizaola in 1966-67 has managed a poorer return.

Unsurprisingly, Depor fans are none too enamoured with the current board and called for the resignation of the directorship during the Las Palmas draw and turned on former favourite Lucas Pérez, who has failed to find the net since November after his return on loan from Arsenal.
