REAL MADRID

Ibrahimovic: a short-term solution at a bargain price for Madrid

Ibrahimovic is 37 but still playing at the top of his game. Real could pick him up for pittance, and a return to Europe's top flight would be an attractive propostion for the former Barca striker.

There has been speculation over the past few days that Real Madrid could be interested in bringing back Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Europe in January. And with Julen Lopetegui side’s current issues in front of goal, the Swede could be a short-term solution at a bargain price.

Ibrahimovic is now 37 years old but he is still at the top of his game. Since arriving at LA Galaxy in March, he has scored 22 goals in 26 games and provided seven assists. The MLS may not be at the level of the European top flight, but these are impressive numbers considering his age.

Ibrahimovic salary would be pittance for Madrid

The former Barcelona striker has a contract in LA until December 2019 and so would not leave on a free transfer, but it would not be an expensive operation for Florentino Pérez.

Ibramihovic’s salary is incredibly low for a player of his level. The giant Swede had to take a 96-percent pay cut when joining Galaxy due to the club’s salary cap, and his €1.5-million-a-year wage would be pittance for Madrid – considering the club’s lowest paid squad members earn more than that (Kiko Casilla, for example, earns €1.75 million a year, while Lucas Vázquez is on €3.5 million). The return to elite European football would no doubt be an attractive proposition for one of the greatest footballers of the modern era.

'Zlatan' guarantees goals

Until Tuesday’s night game against Viktoria Plzen, Benzema had not scored for almost two months, while Mariano has only scored one goal since joining Madrid. Bringing in a number nine with proven goal-scoring record at such a low cost, therefore, would not be a ridiculous idea.

‘Zlatan’ guarantees goals wherever he goes and his experience playing for the biggest clubs in Europe would be highly valuable for a Madrid team currently lacking a prolific centre forward.
