Liverpool return to the stage where little over nine months ago, they were crowned European champions for the sixth time. That victory over Spurs in Madrid was a pivotal moment for Klopp’s side, it has jettisoned them into a new dimension altogether. They are practically unbeatable – out of the 33 official games Liverpool's first team have played since they were last in the Spanish capital*, they have lost just one - to Napoli in the group stage back in September.
The same can’t be said for Tuesday’s rivals Atlético, who promised so much during the pre-season but whose confidence has taken such a battering, they’ve been relying on team-bonding dinners out of office hours to try to get their spirits up. Diego Simeone lost his first-choice back four over the summer and that has been the biggest factor in the team’s struggles. In Godín, they lost an asset in defence and a player who could double up in attack, getting on the end of their trademark set-pieces.
Added to that have been a constant stream of injuries which have meant Atleti have been unable to enjoy much consistency. Record signing João Félix has demonstrated he has quality - but maybe Simeone has overworked him – it’s baffling how a player who is still only 21 can only last 60 minutes of a match. Not that he will be taking part in the first leg against Liverpool – he’s out with a muscular injury...
With their new-look defence Atleti are not quite as impervious at the back as they once were but they are still a very difficult team to score again and have the best figures in LaLiga. Much of that is down to Jan Oblak who has been superb. For Atleti, their problem area is scoring goals. The team has just 25 goals in LaLiga – 11 teams have scored more in the division. On the plus side they have been strong at their stadium this season and like Liverpool, are experts at winning by slim margins. Simeone knows that his team will need to take at least one goal to Anfield for the return leg
João Félix, Héctor Herrera and Kieran Trippier were the three absentees from Atlético’s training session this morning. Álvaro Morata returned in Friday’s 2-2 draw at Valencia, playing his first minutes since picking up a muscular injury in the Madrid derby a fortnight ago. Diego Costa is also available again, although is last competitive match was back in November – he returned to full training just over a week ago and appears to be over his discal hernia problems. Also fully fit once again are right-back Santiago Arias and centre-back Giménez.
The Premier League mid-season break gave Klopp time to recover two of his key players – Sadio Mané, Fabinho and James Milner - all of whom were given a run-out in Saturday’s 0-1 win at Norwich. A 21-man travelling squad has made the trip to Spain – including winter signing Takumi Minamino who was registered in Liverpool’s A list at the start of the month. Just midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri (hamstring) and right-back Nathaniel Clyne (ACL) were left back on Merseyside.
